Fredrick Douglass said it best, "It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.”
Help us make the 11th Annual 100 Wave Challenge a success for Boys to Men Mentoring. That's right, not even a pandemic from stop us from raising funds for this fabulous non-profit which reaches the hearts and lives of young teenage boys who need mentoring, accountability and a positive male role model in their young lives.
The problem, the devastating effects of fatherlessness on a teenager’s life:
- 85% of youths in prisons grew up in a fatherless home.
- 71% of high school dropouts come from fatherless homes.
- 80% of rapists with displaced anger come from fatherless homes.
- 63% of youth suicides are from fatherless homes.
- Gang membership increased from 50,000 in 1975 to 1,150,000 in 2008.
- 90% of homeless children are from fatherless homes.
- 85% of children with behavioral disorders come from fatherless homes.
- 90% of adolescent repeat arsonists live with only their mother.
The solution: The Boys to Men Mentoring Foundation has over 30 chapters around the globe putting circle groups together in public schools, equipping these young men with a positive male who can share their story, their personal connection and keep these boys accountable for their decisions, encourage them on their journey and mentor them towards a path of personal responsibility.
Surfers Unite Rotarian Fellowship has been proud to support this initiative and our Founder and several members have been participating on the Degree 33 Surfboards team for years. This years format is going to be a little different. Surfers will still be raising money online and catching 100 waves each in a single day, a task that is physically and mentally demanding however due to COVID we will not be doing a single day event at one location. Instead our crew will be able to pick a date and go out at a local break. Best part, we are expanding our crew to include you. Live in Australia, France, Portugal, Florida, Hawaii, Northern California or anywhere in between? We want you as a Surfers Unite member to be a part of the action. Not a surfer but want to volunteer? No worries sign up and we will contact you for volunteer opportunities. It's time to have some fun and surf our hearts out for these kids. There will be teams competing each weekend Sept 19-Nov 22 so plenty of ways to help out during the event.
The Degree 33 Surfboard Team which comprises of many Surfers Unite members will complete the 100 Wave Challenge on October 3rd at Cardiff State Beach. Join us for a great time as Pannikin serves up the coffee and danish and Board & Brew provides us surfers with lunch. It's going to be epic!
